In the 50 years since then, hip-hop’s impact and influence have reached beyond music throughout culture, from fashion to film to literature and more. Join The New York Public Library this summer to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop with programs, reading recommendations, and more! In 1973 at a South Bronx house party, DJ Kool Herc isolated and repeated the percussive “break” in the tracks he was spinning, creating one of the first instances of hip-hop as people would come to know it. One day, five boroughs-join us on Saturday, August 5, for the second annual Dance Party NYC, a joyous citywide festival of music and movement, at The New York Public Library! This year’s dance party will take place at more than 20 venues across the city, including events at select library branches and at the Stephen A. Registration is recommended but walk-ups will be welcome as space allows. Participants will learn some foundational hip-hop steps before putting them to use in an all-out dance party! KOM3 is a seasoned BBoy and expert educator from NYC who has traveled the world competing and performing. Join KOM3 of the Breaks Kru to celebrate Hip Hop's 50th birthday! In this family-friendly workshop, we will explore the history and evolution of Breakin' (sometimes referred as breakdancing), one of the four elements of Hip Hop, using a combination of storytelling, fitness exercises, and choreography that everyone can enjoy. What better way to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop than a dance party?Īs part of Dance Party NYC, Allerton Library is ringing in the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop in the Bronx with Urban Stages' Dance instructor Richard "Kom3" Scott: Tumbling classes - Any dance outfit is allowed, no shoes or socks, hair should be pulled back for class.Join Us for a Hip-Hop Dance Class at Allerton Library!.Technical ballet classes - Any solid colored leotard, pink tights, pink ballet shoes (canvas split sole), hair must be in a bun with a hair net over it for technical ballet class.Boys should wear comfortable clothes and black jazz shoes. Hair should be pulled up and back for class. They need some form of turning shoe whether that is suntan bloch superjazz shoe or the pulse super jazz shoe, or pirouettes or foot undeez. 7th-12th grade jazz/lyrical - any dance outfit is allowed.They can also wear foot undeez or pirouette and shoes to class but will most likely need the jazz shoes for recital. They need suntan bloch super jazz shoes or bloch suntan pulse jazz shoes. 4th-6th grade combo classes - Any dance outfit is allowed.When it is recital time most will need pink ballet shoes and also sometimes suntan super jazz shoes but if you would like to wait and see if it’s required with their costume that is totally fine. Dancers can take class in foot undeez, suntan bloch super jazz shoes, barefoot(but will need shoes when turning). 2nd/3rd grade combo class - Any dance outfit is allowed.Boys should wear comfortable clothes and black jazz shoes and tap shoes. If you want to wait until closer to recital to figure that out it is fine. Some classes will need these for recital and some will not. It is optional to purchase suntan bloch super jazz shoes or not. They will need pink ballet shoes and any color tap shoes. K/1st combo class - Any dance outfit is allowed.Boys should wear comfortable clothes and black jazz shoes and black tap shoes. We prefer velcro tap shoes so that we aren’t tying so many pairs of shoes. They will need pink ballet shoes and any color tap shoes are fine. Preschool combo class - (reminder that this is for older 4/5 year olds that will be attending Kindergarten in 2020.Boys should wear comfortable clothes and have black ballet or jazz shoes. 3 & 4 yr old combo class - girls- Any dance outfit is allowed. Tennis shoes are mandatory in order to get to participate in the class.
